June 30, 2009 — CRP, once faulted as being one of the body’s bad folks, doesn’t cause heart disease — and CRP tests aren’t much help in predicting heart disease, modern considers appear.
Blood levels of CRP — C-reactive protein — rise when there’s irritation in the body. Unremitting inflammation plays a major role in heart illness, and increased CRP levels are connected to increased chance of heart illness.
But a huge universal genetic consider now affirms earlier reports that CRP itself does not cause heart malady. The think about shows that people whose qualities cause them to make more- or less-than-normal amounts of CRP do not have more or less heart infection.
Hence CRP-lowering drugs now beneath advancement “are unlikely to be fruitful,” conclude consider analysts Paul Elliott, FRCP, of Royal College, London, and colleagues.
